GS Nguyễn Văn Tuấn "Chiến Binh Sói" và kẻ tòng phạm Twitter

Xin chia sẻ cùng các bạn một cái note bằng tiếng Anh [1] về câu chuyện Triệu Lập Kiên đăng hình giả tạo để nói xấu Úc.

Triệu là một trong những người thuộc nhóm gọi là "Chiến Binh Sói" ngoại giao (Wolf Warriors diplomat) của Tàu, và cách hành xử của mấy người này giống như ... côn đồ trên trường quốc tế.

Chúng ta đã từng nghe họ ăn nói thô lỗ và bị các quan chức Phi Luật Tân đuổi ra khỏi hội nghị ngoại giao ở Manila. Chúng ta cũng từng nghe họ trịch thượng gọi Việt Nam là 'prodigal son' (đứa con hoang đàng). Mới tháng Tư năm nay, họ ví von Úc là cục kẹo chewing gum dính vào đế giày của Tàu ("chewing gum stuck on the sole of China's shoes").

Tất cả những cách nói đó thể hiện một trường phái ngoại giao hung hãn gọi là Wolf Warriors. Đối với mấy 'chiến binh sói' này, tính lịch sự và tôn trọng không có trong protocol của họ.

Nhưng điều đáng nói ở đây là thái độ của Twitter. Ông Thủ tướng Úc Scott Morrison kêu gọi Twitter xóa bỏ tấm hình giả tạo đó, nhưng cho đến hôm nay Twitter làm ngơ lời kêu gọi của ông. Thay vào đó, Twitter đề một dòng chữ như sau:

"The following media includes potentially sensitive content."

Sao họ có thể nói vậy được? Ở đây không phải là chuyện 'nhạy cảm'. Vấn đề là tấm hình đó giả tạo. Nó giả. Nó dối trá. Mà, Twitter thì có chánh sách không khuyến khích đăng hình ảnh giả tạo và cấm xiển dương bạo lực. Tấm hình đó rõ ràng mang tính bạo lực, vậy mà Twitter không chịu xóa !

Chúng ta phải hỏi tại sao Twitter không 'censor' Triệu Lập Kiên? Mới đây, Twitter còn kiểm duyệt cả Tổng thống Donald Trump kia mà. Ấy vậy mà họ không dám động đến một viên chức cấp trung như họ Triệu !

Chúng ta phải hỏi hay là Twitter đã bán các giá trị căn bản của thế giới tự do cho giới toàn trị để có một thế đứng ở bên Tàu ?

Dù sao thì sự lựa chọn của Twitter đã biến họ thành kẻ tòng phạm với các con chó sói ngoại giao Tàu trong chiến dịch hạ nhục và hăm dọa Úc.

Yesterday, on a Chinese government twitter account, Mr. Zhao Lijian tweeted a graphic image depicting an Australian soldier holding a bloody knife to the throat of an Afghan child with a caption that reads "Don't be afraid, we are coming to bring you peace".

The problem is that the image is fake.

Either Mr Zhao or someone has doctored the image [1] to deliberately make Australia and Australian soldiers look bad in the international arena. In either case, the behavior of Zhao, in his capacity as a middle-ranking diplomat, is unacceptable.

You may be forgiven to think that this is a random outburst from an ill-informed individual. No, it is not. The background story is that in recent months, Australia - China relations have hit a low ebb, primarily because Australia has openly backed President Trump's calls for an enquiry into the origin of Covid-19 pandemic. The Chinese communist government was not happy with the Australian stance, and they have taken every juncture to make Australian exports to China more difficult. Just last week, Beijing has imposed tariff of up to 212% on Australian wine. And, prior to that, Chinese Customs halted import of Australian lobsters by alleging that the lobsters had been contaminated! So, the latest incident is just a calculated move in a series of measures designed to undermine and intimidate Australia.

You may be surprised that a diplomat like Mr Zhao Lijian could go that low. However, Zhao belongs to a new breed of Chinese diplomats called 'wolf warriors' who are prepared to use disinformation to achieve their goal. To these wolf warriors, politeness and respect are not part of their protocol in international discourse.

Indeed, the lack of civilized behavior among these 'wolf warrior' Chinese officials is not new at all. In the past, they have used stiff language on a long strings of countries besides Australia. In April this year, Hu xijin (editor of the Global Times, a mouthpiece doing dirty utterance for the Chinese Communist Party) ridiculed Australia as a "chewing gum stuck on the sole of China's shoes" [3]. A few years ago, they called Vietnam a 'prodigal son' [4] -- a deeply offensive to Vietnamese -- amid a dangerous standoff between Vietnam and China in the disputed Paracel Island. Those are the kind of Chinese new diplomacy language.

It is quite disturbing that Zhao's offensive post is propagated by big tech like Twitter. The Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has asked Twitter to remove the fake image, but until now, Twitter has ignored his plea. Instead of taking the post down, Twitter added beneath the post that "The following media includes potentially sensitive content."

No. No. It is not "potentially sensitive"; it is fake. It is a lie.

This is the response from the company that proclaims "You may not deceptively share synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm. In addition, we may label tweets containing synthetic and manipulated media to help people understand their authenticity and to provide additional context," and "prohibit the glorification of violence."

One must ask why Twitter has refused to censor the Chinese official? Afterall, Twitter used to censor President Donald Trump, but they chose not to censor the fake image from a Chinese spokesman. It is curious, indeed. One has to therefore question whether Twitter has sold out the values of the free world to get a good side of China? I hope not.

In an ideal world, one would expect that diplomats to behave respectfully and that big tech companies don't take side. However, that ideal seems to be a luxury for some Chinese officials and Twitter. The fake image posted by Zhao Lijian does nothing to aid China’s effort to be recognized as a civilized member of the international community. The refusal of Twitter to take down the image qualifies as an act of complicit intimidation.

I consider that the Chinese government and Twitter owe Australia a formal and unreserved apology. Big tech cannot and should not hide behind the pretext of 'free speech' or technical excuse to bend their moral values to please diplomatic thugs.
